In contrast to the avant-garde design approaches of the 1960s and 70s, in which by each significant theories came beforehand, now according to Micheal Speaks, the experimental Architecture is not longer characterized by revolutionary theories, but is much more influenced through the the rapid and substantial technological change in the area of digital design tools as well as the digital manufacturing techniques of architectural constructions. A new design methodology he identifies is the interactive prototyping, allowing the designer to develop a certain design intelligence during the design process.

The aim of this project is to analyze the potential of digital prototyping as a work or research method and to use for one's own design. As a manufacturing method, a digital laser cutter is available for the students. Questions about scalability, material properties and its performance as well as constructive specifications will be researched and answered on the basis of the ongoing digital and physical models. 

Based on the examination of different patterns and its effect on the material properties as well as manufacturing-related connection techniques, the students are to develop designs for a spacial structure consisting of a multitude of individual modules joined together. The intelligence and creativity lies in the preparation of this module and its connection logic. 

At the end of the course, one design will be implemented on a 1:1 scale, in order to check factors such as scalability, spatial qualities and constructive aspects.
